A system is more than a library
A component library stores reusable implementation. A design system explains why those components exist, how they combine, where they should not be used, and how the language evolves.

From token to pattern
Small shared decisions combine into components, layouts, and complete product behavior.

Layers of a living system
The visible library is the output. Shared decision-making is the system.
- 01Principles guide judgment.
- 02Tokens preserve named visual decisions.
- 03Components encode behavior and semantics.
- 04Patterns solve recurring product tasks.
- 05Contribution keeps the system alive.
Adoption is a design problem
Teams use systems that are easier and more trustworthy than local invention. Documentation, examples, migration paths, support, and governance shape adoption as much as component quality.
Measure outcomes
Count fewer duplicate solutions, faster accessible implementation, clearer product language, and more reliable change—not only the number of published components.
Exercise 01
Is this decision systemic?
Reveal the observation +
A decision belongs in the system when it recurs, carries meaningful risk, and benefits from shared maintenance. One-off composition does not automatically need a token or component.
Chapter summary
Keep these
ideas close.
- 01A system connects principles, assets, behavior, and practice.
- 02Adoption depends on trust, support, and contribution.
- 03Consistency serves comprehension rather than replacing judgment.
